Serving Greater in GBR

Our Future is Our Why—BlackWellness Initiatives & Impact

Initiative #1: Wellness Expos

BlackWellness envisions a proactive approach to addressing the health disparities faced by underserved and disinvested communities in Baton Rouge. Our strategic initiative involves organizing comprehensive Wellness Expos aimed at delivering essential education, health screenings, and resources. These expos feature a diverse range of activities, including children’s programs, health screenings, dietary demonstrations, and expert-led discussions on advocacy, mindfulness, and gut health. Additionally, we prioritize partnering with food vendors offering healthier options to promote better dietary choices among attendees.

Securing funding is paramount to executing our mission effectively, as it enables us to cover the costs associated with organizing each Expo, ensuring their sustainability and impact. Screenings offered encompass critical health indicators such as blood pressure, blood glucose levels, screenings for sexually transmitted infections/diseases, heart murmurs, and stroke detection, facilitating early intervention and prevention efforts.

Our commitment extends beyond hosting one-time events; we aim to establish our Wellness Expos as recurring initiatives, driven by the demonstrated need within the community. These expos will be strategically dispersed across Greater Baton Rouge, including areas such as Scotland, Baker, North & South BR, ensuring equitable access to essential services and resources.

Recognizing the prevalent issue of food deserts within our city, we are dedicated to addressing this challenge through education and empowerment. Our focus includes initiatives such as promoting urban agriculture projects like the Baton Roots Community Gardens, providing residents with opportunities to cultivate food and access fresh produce at no cost.

Initiative #2: SMILE Podcast

At BlackWellness, we recognize the urgent need for dedicated spaces where individuals, particularly school-aged children, and adults from marginalized communities, can safely explore and process the intergenerational traumas, emotional burdens, and societal pressures that impact their mental and emotional well-being. Our initiative aims to establish a weekly podcast addressing this need. The podcast will be led by trusted members of the GBR community. Individuals interested in sharing may do so in anonymity via call or text to the designated phone line.

We understand that the effects of generational trauma, epigenetics, and interpersonal conflicts can significantly impact one's mental health and overall quality of life. Through the Podcast, we provide a supportive environment where participants can engage in healing practices, therapeutic activities, and meaningful discussions.

Initiative #3: Rehoming Former Foster Youth

BlackWellness is deeply committed to supporting the youth of Baton Rouge, particularly those who have aged out of the foster care system. Understanding the unique challenges these young individuals face as they transition into adulthood, BlackWellness is developing a comprehensive plan to establish transitional housing specifically tailored to their needs. This initiative aims to provide a stable and supportive environment where former foster youth can develop essential life skills, pursue education and employment opportunities, and ultimately achieve independence. The transitional housing program will offer not only safe and affordable housing but also access to mentorship, counseling, and resources to help navigate the challenges of independent living. By prioritizing the well-being and empowerment of these young adults, BlackWellness is making a meaningful investment in the future of Baton Rouge, fostering resilience and success among its most vulnerable population.

Impact #1:

The impact of our Podcast extends beyond individual healing; it holds the potential to address broader societal issues, including school and neighborhood violence. By providing safe spaces for individuals to process their emotions, acknowledge their traumas, and develop healthy coping mechanisms, we aim to catalyze a positive ripple effect within our communities.

One of the root causes of violence in our schools and neighborhoods is often the inability to effectively manage emotions and conflicts. When individuals lack the necessary tools to address their emotional struggles, they may resort to violence as a means of resolving disputes or expressing frustration. By offering opportunities for open dialogue and emotional expression, our podcast equips participants with alternative strategies for conflict resolution and communication.

Furthermore, by promoting mental health awareness and de-stigmatizing conversations around trauma, we create a culture where seeking support is encouraged rather than shunned. When individuals feel empowered to prioritize their mental well-being, they are less likely to engage in harmful behaviors that perpetuate cycles of violence.

Through our efforts, we foster a sense of community and belonging that transcends individual experiences. By bringing together diverse perspectives and lived experiences, we facilitate empathy, understanding, and collaboration. Participants learn to recognize the humanity in one another and develop a shared commitment to building safer and healthier environments for all.

Ultimately, by addressing the underlying issues that contribute to violence and promoting mental health in safe and supportive spaces, we contribute to a more peaceful and resilient society. Together, we can break the cycle of violence and create communities where every individual feels valued, heard, and supported.
